We created a development version of our website in a subdirectory to implement significant changes before taking this version live. We havent made any updates to Joomla or their extensions. However, our URLs were not working properly so we turned on SEF URLS in Joomla admin and now the entire dev site displays a 500 error.
We checked the config file and $sef_rewrite = false; is set to 'false'
