Not that it might help much because I'm currently running the site on a Joomla 3 backup, but here it is:A link to your working J3 site doesn't help us track down problems with your J5 Error 500.

Isn't that what I included in my second post? What we need is the actual error, which can be obtained by turning on Debug and/or PHP error reporting.
Those settings are active according to the FPA report : Error Reporting: maximum | Site Debug: true, so if you had been able to post the errors seen on screen in J5,we'd have a better sense of what was going on.

I use Transmit on a Mac for FTP, and I looked for a batch permissions function but didn't see anything for files, only for enclosed folders. Anyhow I remember reading somewhere that it was best to handle permissions directly on the server rather than via FTP, but maybe that was bad info?It would be easier to change file permissions in an FTP program - CHMOD the folders 755 and files 644, and the configuration.phgp to 444.
In any case as I mentioned above, I had a J5 backup that I restored. It was three weeks old so I had to make a few tweaks to it to bring it up to date, so all is good now.
